Developing Characters in a Romantic Suspense

One of the shortcuts that I have been using, for creating the physical characteristics of a character, is to chose a photo of an actor as reference. I keep this photo handy as I write.

One of the benefits of this technique, is that I don’t have to try and remember if the hero has dark hair or light hair or what color the heroine’s eyes might be. I generally chose actors for the nemesis, as well. This technique is especially useful when writing a series over the course of a year. And as I move into more than one series, where the characters might all know each other, this technique becomes even more important.

If I am going to have one of my characters from a different book make an appearance in the current one, it is great to take a quick look to make sure that I get their appearance right.

Below are the actors that I referenced for my Protectors at Heart series (Defensive Action, Adirondack Attack, Warning Shot and Dangerous Conditions).
