Jenna Kernan Apache Protectors: Wolf Den covers

First Lines as Hooks in Writing Novels

May 23, 2018 by Jenna Kernan in Writing Process

Do you read first lines?

I sure do!

I often find myself in bookstores, looking at covers and reading back cover blurbs. If those grab me, I open to page one and read the opening line.  It that appeals, I read the next...and so on.
What about you? Is that how you select a book in a store?

Just for fun, I've added the first lines of all four of my Apache Protectors: Wolf Den series for your perusal.

APACHE PROTECTORS: WOLF DEN

SURROGATE ESCAPE #1
Officer Jake Redhorse turned into his driveway and caught movement in his periphery by the line of pine and sticker bushes to his left.

TRIBAL BLOOD #2
Kacey Doka felt the warm gush of liquid surge down her thighs as her water broke.

UNDERCOVER SCOUT #3
Detective Ava Hood watched her prime suspect, Dr. Kee Redhorse, through her field glasses and scowled.

BLACK ROCK GUARDIAN #4
At the sound of tires crunching in the gravel drive, Ty Redhorse glanced up from beneath the hood of the '76 Cadillac Eldorado to see two cop cars pull before the open bay of his garage.
